For Ubuntu and most other distributions
Just run the following command in a terminal window:
sudo apt install notepadqq
Launchpad PPA
This method is not recommended. Use the above apt or the snap package instead.
PPA address: https://launchpad.net/~notepadqq-team/+archive/notepadqq
To install Notepadqq, simply run the following commands in a terminal:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:notepadqq-team/notepadqq
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install notepadqq
Arch Linux
sudo pacman -S notepadqq
OpenSUSE
sudo zypper in notepadqq
Nix users
nix-env -i notepadqq
Others
Check if Notepadqq is available in your distribution’s repositories. If not, you can build from source. Instructions at: https://github.com/notepadqq/notepadqq.
I set the app’s Flatpak to my language only to find that it is a weird mix of French and English. As of now, the Portuguese translation does not make sense to a native reader.

in Ubuntu 18.04 text selection as columns wont work holding down the Shift Key
The windows version should do that , but for linux other than Gnome ,how it works?
Use Shift+Alt+Mouse instead, it works. No cursor keys managed for vertical selection.

I would like to share a negative opinion about one feature for otherwise excellent product. Why in the world, you had to add the world’s most needless, and absolutely pointless question?
The file is xx megabytes big, are you sure you want to open it?
Yes i want to open it, obviously, if i am double clicking to open the associated file it is obvious i want to open it.
Can you provide clear and easy to understand, easy to apply steps, how to disable this annoying question?
Please, mac version…
Notepad++ because of the military operation, threatening slogans are being written, I began to be afraid of them! Need an urgent replacement, will you make a release for Windows?
The dev supports Ukraine. I’m down with that.
Geany for now
what about SciTE?… but can’t find how to select text as column holding down Shift , does Geany do that?
Como colocar em português
Windows version?
Are you fucking retard?
hahaha can I have an Android version?
what’s fucking wrong with the question?
this is a linux program thats like what windows already has so there would not be a windows version here. for windows google notepad++
notepadqq is an alternative for Notepad ++ and THIS IS THE WINDOWS VERSION :)
Maybe notepad++ is blocked by security asshole.
security asshole sounds too dark for me. could we use a differnt hole for security?
Notepad++
Geany. Different but kinda same.
no me sirve
o sorry its snap crap
You do not need snapd to install this app
Great app. Thanks for sharing.
was successfully installed on Kali Linux 2020.3, thanks!
Oh, how I missed notepad++ … during my windows days, this was the first application I was installing – yes, even before chrome.
if you don’t mind wine you can have ++ as well
It’s developer activism and deliberate introduction of bugs so users can see the developer message is terrible…
At least Geany exists in Windows even if I want to use notepadqq
I used to think that notepadqq was the best, but I just found out about Geany, it is a better notepad editor hands down and you dont have to deal with all of the installation issues that u get with notepadqq. I am done with you guys.
whom ever came out with the snap install needs to be fired
Where i can find plugins?
“add-apt-repository ppa:notepadqq-team/notepadqq”
NOT WORK to Debian 10 (Buster)
try to find what is exactly format using for app in Buster. profit 100% if u cant find – so not supporting anymore
same here, it seems that they are trying to force everyone back in to using the snap installer again. people did not like it the first time, I am not sure why they would want to force people in to it a second time.
http://ftp.br.debian.org/debian/pool/main/n/notepadqq/notepadqq_2.0.0~beta1-1+b1_amd64.deb
then use gdebi to install
gdebi, under debian 10, said : la dépendance ne peut être satisfaite : libgcc-s1 (>= 3.0)
what can i do ? Big thanks !
Hey! You just need to
and then redo the command!
When I configure
Edit > Indentation > Custom…
Notepadqq applies my settings but doesn’t remember them next time I start. Indentation is back to Default settings.
I tried
Settings > Preferences… –> Languages
and set custom indentation for the “Default” and the programming language I open files but the issue remains.
How can we make Notepadqq remember indentation custom settings?
Lubuntu 18.04 LTS, Notepadqq v1.4.2, installed from PPA
I installed Notepadqq v1.4.2 on Lubuntu 18.04 LTS. It runs fine but it created two shortcuts: one in menu://applications/Accessories and another in menu://applications/Programming. If I turn one hidden, the other becomes hidden too. How can I hide or remove one but not both?
I managed to solve this issue:
In the file
/home/UserName/.local/share/applications/notepadqq.desktop
replace this line
Categories=Development;Utility;TextEditor;
by
Categories=Development;
Thanks for the PPA!
I recommend it for erveryone who has problems!
I used the shitty snap version first.
Why is it shit?
1. It takes about 5 (real) seconds to start (a text editor starting from a NVMe LOL)
2. The frames look like Windows 95
3. The mouse Coursor changes in the notepad, just looks really ugly
4. Permission Denied issue…..
This is because Snap is shit, not notepadqq.
Just installed it. cant find it in the system? Where is it intsalled to? I want to open a YML file but I dont get an option to use notepadqq
You can see where any binary is installed with the command “whereis”
On your terminal type “whereis notepadqq” and press enter. The binary is most probably at your /usr/bin/ directory.
nice thanks
saludos .. tiene sintaxis para Asciidoc???
I too just uninstalled snap version because of the “permission denied” problem and installed the ppa version.
Flat pack stops me from launching with Filezilla, and many other programs. So I’m forced download files, and work with the locally.
Flatpack is a stupid attempt at idiot proofing linux installations. Works great if your installing things like minecraft… Not good for productivity.
I have been beaten. Beaten by tab setting. I surely do not understand how the tabulation setting works/should work in notepadqq, but I tried many different settings and nothing changed. I need to set tab to 8 characters, no matter the language (especially that I need it for some exotic language not being on that list). So how can I set tab to 8 characters?
Hello, exist the possibility to find a source with the current binary Notepadqq for Slackware? on other hand I would like to compile the source. but I couldn’t in Slackware , I got several errors
FOLKS, MANY ARE STRUGGLING WITH MULTIPLE ISSUE (ARCHAIC ICON LOOK, PERMISSION ISSUES FOR ME, ETC, ETC, ETC). ALL OF THAT IS DUE TO TRYING TO USE THE SNAP PACKAGE AS SUGGESTED. TO HELL THIS SNAP PACKAGE, AND FLATPAK WITH IT!!! INSTALL FROM PPA AS YOU NORMALLY WOULD. APPLICATIONS ARE SMALLEST IN SIZE AND WORK BEST WHEN INSTALLED FROM PPA.
DO NOT USE FLATPAK. IT IS LIKE GOING BACK TO MICROSOFT C++ REDISTRIBUTABLES. IT LEAVES A HUNDRED OF PACKAGES ON YOUR SYSTEM AND OCCUPYIES GIGABYTES OF DISK SPACE FOR TRIVIAL APPLICATIONS!!!
SNAP HAS SIMILAR ISSUES. FOR ME, EVERYTHING WAS A “PERMISSION DENIED”, COULD DO ABSOLUTELY NOTHING UNTIL I REMOVED SNAP VERSION AND REPLACED WITH PPA VERSION.
FOR THE ABSOLUTE IN SPEED AND SIZE, COMPILING FROM SOURCE IS RESERVED FOR VERY ADVANCED USERS.
I am agree with you, FLATPAK and SNAP are not a conventional in the linux environment and such thing are creating struggles because people is dealing to choose an installation between PPA or another source
Amen, brother. Bumped into problems a couple of months ago. Ubuntu pushed chromium into snap and stopped supporting it in apt repos -> can’t open hidden folders in it anymore -> a bit of googling + trying to reinstall it in classic confinement -> installs just fine -> BUT AFTER INSTALLATION still says that it could give a flying fuck about my flags, options, root privileges or anything else on that matter -> ok fuck it, i’ll use chrome instead -> found out there’s a newer versions of notepadqq on snap -> installed it -> no access to hidden files -> trying to reinstall in different confinements with different commands, option placement etc. for 3 billion times -> every time it installs (i.e. eats my ssd resources) but ignores confinement options, so nothing’s changing -> wait, wtf is this drive activity? -> iotop + fatrace -f W -> THIS PIECE OF SHIT AUTOUPDATES ON ITS OWN LIKE WIN10!!! -> sudo apt purge snap* -> notepadqq github page -> git clone…..
Flatpak isn’t as bad, but ye, the way it works, you’re still supposed to install some crap on top of what you want, and sometimes it takes gigs of space
How do I install portuguese accent marks?
Like these é ó ô â ão and etc
thanks for any help
since there’s no instructions on how to actually launch the editor, I used ‘snap run notepaddqq’. I get the console error below re: could not open display.
could not connect to display :12.0
I installed new version 1.4.8 on my new Linux Mint 19.3 last week and was surprised to see that all icons are black and white:. It’s especially annoying in file tabs because I can’t see which files have unsaved changes.
Is this normall? Can I change?
Just installed on Xubuntu 19.10 and Notepadqq has awful windows. It makes me fell as I was using a Windows 95 software. It does not appears as the images on this site. Something is wrong. I remeber to use notepadqq in Xubuntu 18.10 and the windows were good. I dont know if it was the snap installation that messed up. I am almost unistalling notepadqq, let’s see how much time I will use as it is now, but right now almost giving up.
yes like me the interface is bad on ubuntu 19.10
Hi, I installed OK, but when i apply some themes (like dark mode) => settings -> preference -> apparence -> and choose any (random color scheme) -> apply

How to Install Notepadqq via PPA repository
http://tipsonubuntu.com/2018/03/09/install-notepadqq-notepad-like-editor-ubuntu-18-04-17-10/
I’m testing nqq as default code editor. It looks great, but i can’t acces to my programm library in /var/www/html/. I guessed it is a permisson-problem and changed mod of /var/www to 755 and ownership to ‘myuser’ but as the only result nqq didn’t start at all. Is there any config-file we could define or include the desired working directory?
Using Ubuntu19.10 and Win7 in Dualboot.
Using 18.04 64bit, with snap installation I can only use my home folder, no others. Then i found a flathub version on Ubuntu software which works.
Thanks for the comment. We will try to support flatpak too for the next release since it appears to be more mature for our use
beach
i closed the tool bar and menu bar but i don’t know how to show them, could you tell me? Thank you!
Hi, take a look here: https://github.com/notepadqq/notepadqq/issues/633
Hello, thanks for the awesome software. After the big linux kernel update the snap install no longer works (I’m on debian stretch linux 10 buster, gnome 3.30.2, i5 Skylake GT2) : I used Notepadqq under the X11 system, after the kernel update Notepad broken, then I reinstalled it via snap, but snap is missing the Wayland plugin.
The installation was successful, but if I run the application it says:
This application failed to start because it could not find or load the Qt platform plugin “wayland-egl”.
Available platform plugins are: eglfs, linuxfb, minimal, minimalegl, offscreen, xcb.
Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.
I found this topic on snap forum, and it may be related: https://forum.snapcraft.io/t/problem-launching-qt-snaps-in-wayland/7055
Can you please fix it with a new release? Thank you!

Fedora user original rpm install: sudo dnf install notepatqq
Snapd is a terrible project, slows down your computer and turns it into a dump. Don’t use Snapd!
Fedora rpm install: sudo dnf install notepadqq
Thanks
